Moved to Kansas City, Kansas, to Armourdale from Paducah or UnionTown, Kentucky, between 1903 and 1905. Employed as a maintenance worker with the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. Photo of Gary, Milty, and Dick Girten is in file for Elizabeth Gough Girten. Died of a stroke and was cared for by the Little Sisters of the Poor after stroke. A devout Catholic, he never missed Mass on Sunday and often went during the week when he could. His daughter Mary said that he always wore a suit to Mass. Mary also said that she, her mother, Elizabeth Ann Girten, a friend were playing penochole when William Virgil Girten began to feel the stroke and that by the next morning he could not use his left arm and his sight failed. He declined rapidly and the Little Sisters of the Poor were called to care for him.

He is buried, with his spouse, Elizabeth Gough, in Section 3 Old, Lot 237, Sp 2, Mount Calvary Cemetery, 38th and State Ave, Kansas City, Kansas. This grave is in the first row which faces 38th Street.[Girten, Charles, 1819.FTW]

William married Elizabeth Ann "Bettie" Gough on 11 Feb 1899 in St. Agnes Church, Union Town, Kentucky. Elizabeth (daughter of George Benjamin Gough and Alice Frances Gough) was born on 11 Apr 1877 in Uniontown, Union County, Kentucky; died in 1976 in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas; was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, KS. Notes:

In the 1900 Union County Census, Bettie A. Gough and Josie Gough were living with their widowed uncle, Henry Sherman Gough.

    [george benjamin gough.FTW]

Birth documented in the St. Agnes Baptismal Records, Uniontown, Kentucky, 1869-1878, p. 18.
At Elizabeth's baptism on July 11, 1877, in St Agnes Church's Baptismal Records, page 18, Uniontown, Kentucky, her sponsor was Mary M. Alvey.

1877: July 11th baptized, Elizabeth Ann, daughter of George Gough and Alice Gough. Born April 11th, 1877, sponsor Mary M. Alvey. It is fairly conclusive that Alice's maiden name was Gough since it is listed in that manner on the baptismal records as the wife's maiden name which was always given. Now need to begin searching where her Gough records are.

The family celebrated Elizabeth Ann Girten's 100th birthday in 1976 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on north 55th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The following information is synthesized from the notes read that evening. Leo Harris, husband of Mary Girten Harris, daughter of Elizabeth, read notes compiled and written by Leona Agnes Girten Hawver, daugher of Elizabeth Girten.

[For the sake of accuracy, it must be noted that Elizabeth Ann Gough Girten was born on April 11th, 1877, as recorded in the Baptismal Records of St. Agnes Church in Uniontown, Kentucky. She was baptized on July 11th, 1877. Leona realized that Elizabeth was 99 rather than 100, but continued with the 100th recognition party. wlh]

Born April 11th, 1876 (note above para), on a farm in Uniontown, Kentucky, the Elizabeth (aka Betty Girten) Ann's family raised vegatables and cattle, but the largest product was tobacco. Josie (Josephene Lea), a sister, and a brother, George, went to a Catholic School at Shawneetown, Illinois. They must have crossed the Ohio River each morning and evening. (might wonder if they boarded)

Her parents died when she was eight and she finished school at the 6th grade. She went to live with two aunts (one aunt was Mary Ida Gough Bevins, her father George's sister) was who had a dress shop and they taught her to trim ladies hats. One of the aunts was a dressmaker, the other a tailor who made ladies suits. At 21, she kept house for an uncle whose wife had recently died. He did the cooking and she cared for his three children. Very pretty, she was once voted the prettiest girl in Uniontown. Elizabeth laughed over this many times since there were only nine young ladies of that age to chose from.

At 22, Elizabeth started dating and being courted by Virgil Girten, a man she had known all of her life. He was nine years older and spent a large part of his youth helping to raise his five younger brother and sisters and maintaining the family farm. Elizabeth and Virgil Girten were married on February 11, 1899. He showed his love and devotion to Elizabeth by having her taken to the church in a carriage drawn by two white horses. Her wedding dress was powder blue, trimmed with white lace. Elizabeth and Virgil took a two week honeymoon in Evansville, Indiana.

Three months after the wedding, Virgil and Elizabeth took a hunting trip to New Orleans with another couple, friends. They traveled by houseboat on the Ohio River to the Mississippi and down the Mississippi to an island off the coast of New Orleans where wild animals were numerous. They returned home on a three decker steam boat.

Virgil Girten worked in a distillery in Uniontown, Kentucky until they moved to Kansas City in 1910. Virgil was a maintenance worker for the Board of Education, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools until he died in 1934.

Virgil and Elizabeth had 10 children. The fifth died in infancy in 1910, Francis or Buster died at age six in 1921 and during the same year Raymond was born and died seven months later. In 1923, Bertha died at age sixteen. Doris "Doy," Joseph "Hap," Harris "Dutch," Leona, Mary, and Vivian lived to adulthood, each married and most had children. Doris and Joseph had no children. At this writing in 1998, Mary and Vivian are alive.

Elizabeth Ann Girten, or Grandma Great to us, was given 100 long stem roses at the birthday party and received a telegram of congratulations from President Carter.

After William Virgil died, son Joseph Crafton, or "Hap" supported his mother. Hap owned and ran a tavern, Hap's Tavern, at 11th and Osage in Armourdale, Kansas City, Kansas, about a block from the family home at 1118 Argentine Blvd. Hap also helped his sister Mary through high school. Later, Mary's husband, Leo, worked for Hap in the Tavern.

Elizabeth Gough Girten is buried in Old Section 3, Lot 237, Sp 1, with her husband, William Virgil Girten, in Mount Calvary Cemetery, 38th and State Avenues, Kansas City, Kansas. Her grave is in the first row which faces 38th Street.

Elizabeth Ann Girten lived with her daughter and husband, Leona Girten and Lloyd Hawver (my parents) from about 1950 until she died at 99 in about 75 so I have most fond memories of her. She was a tiny woman, drank at least a six pack of beer a day, said a daily rosary or more, always had a pinch of Garret's snuff tucked in her lip, and was one of the grandest, most dignified, and kind lady I have ever been around. I'm fairly sure that she had but a minimal education, but she read every newspaper and book around. She could talk about the Kennedys and Truman and the politics of the day. Just a delightful grandmother for me. And she made the best pancakes which she must have learned in Kentucky. (April, 2002)

Captured at Liberty, Tennessee on Feb. 20, 1863
Entered the hospital at Camp Butler, Illinois, on Feb 20, 1863

Valentine was a Confederate veteran, serving in Co. F, 10th KY. Cavalry C.S.A., the "10th KY. Partisan Rangers", with his brother Thomas, 1862-1865.

    The Kentucky Adjutant General's Report states;

"Liberty, Tenn., Dec. 31, 1862 - This Company was raised in Union County, Ky., and participated in most of the engagements which gave the reputation to the Regiment, which it now enjoys, it was in the battle of Donelson-Rolling Mills, Madisonville, Uniontown, Owensboro, Geiger's Lake and several others of minor importance. It was with General Morgan in his last expedition to Kentucky, and participated in the engagements at Elizabethtown, Bacon Creek and Muldrough's Hill."

Valentine was captured by Union forces near Chattanooga, TN. in Sept. 1863. He was sent to the Camp Morton, Indiana POW camp where he remained imprisoned until his release near the end of the war in March, 1865. Valentine was released due to the efforts of his brother Benedict Girten, who learned that Valentine was near the point of death from sickness and starvation in the Union POW camp.
His widow Francis Shanks Girten was awarded a pension from the Commonwealth of Kentucky for his Confederate service in 1916.
    Valentine's grave is apparently unmarked.

James married Frances Elizabeth "Eliza" Shanks on 20 Sep 1867 in Union County, Kentucky. >I'll go over your chart in detail but for the moment I just want to say that I have the same information you have regarding Frances Elizabeth Shanks and her twin brother John Joseph Shanks being illegitimate, Martha's mother Lydia was eh sponser for Joseph and mostly likely Martha's sister Elizabeth Shanks was the sopnser for Frances.. But in Peton Heady's abstract he leaves that fact out and implies they are Gough's, children of Thomas Gough. I know at one time you told me that they were illegitimate and I had the microfilm on permanent loan at the Santa Monica Family History Center and while I don't have a comment to myself in the Thomas Gough file, I'm almost sure that when I saw the original entry it did mention that the two children were illegitimate. I've never found a marriage of Thomas Shanks to Martha Anne Shanks.
    >
    >Also, Thomas Gough was living at home with his parents in the 1850 Union Co, KY census, John Joseph and Elizabeth Frances were listed as Shanks and living with their mother Martha and grandmother Lydia and others in the 1850 census. I show that.
    >
    >Actually my records were all screwed up here. I had Frances Elizabeth Gough listed as the illegitimate daughter of the above and also had her listed as Elizabeth Frances Shanks with no parents and married to James Valentine Austin Girten. I have corrected that error. Not sure why it had not come up earlier, all my notes do not support what I was showing. I had my notations in my notes that I just cut and pasted and put in this e-mail to you. but I'm very grateful for your bringing it up so I can get things right.

    Notes:

    Farmer, probably tobacco.

Documentation from marriage and baptismal records show that George Benjamin Gough is the son of George Silas Gough.

Alice Gough and George Benjamin Gough received a dispensation for marriage from St Agnes Church in Uniontown because of the second cousin relationship

Illinois marriage records 1763 - 1900 show a marriage between George S Gough and Alice Gough in Gallatin County, IL on 11/24/1874 (Volume C, Page 40). Note the middle initial is "S" rather than the "B" of George Benjamin -a possible misinterpretation of handwriting mistaking an "S" for a "B".

At Elizabeth's baptism on July 11, 1877, in St Agnes Church's Baptismal Records, page 18, Uniontown, Kentucky, her sponsor was Mary M. Alvey.

It should be noted that Alice has a brother named George and married a George Gough whom it appears from Family Tree Maker records is from another Gough family, that of George Silas Gough and Letitia Belle Davis. It appears that cousins have married.

The baptismal records at St. Agnes show Alice " Gough" as maiden name; invariably, the maiden name of the mother was recorded.

    Notes:

As I look now at what I have, I recorded Thomas Gough & Martha Shanks as "friends" with this under marriage notes: cannot locate a marriage record. Thomas named as father of Martha's twins, but they are listed as Shanks in 1850, not Gough

I cannot locate Martha in the 1860 census. I do see her son John with his uncle Ambrose Shanks & Frances with her grandmother Lydia Shanks.

I do find her in 1870 next door to her mother & brother in 1870. She also has a dau. Martha Howard age 9 who you do not show below:

Aloysius died in 1862. So Martha must have moved back to Union County.

I don't see any of the children in Peyton Heady's baptismal records for St. Vincent. They were all born in Daviess County, Kentucky

I also feel at a loss, as I cannot find anything at ancestry.com, genealogy library.com with Union Co. marriages aft. 1850.

I'm trying to find out if Peyton Heady's family still has some of his books for sale. I'd found an obit for him from Aug. 2006. There are a couple of books I'd like to buy to supplement what I can find via my various subscriptions.

Children; Teresa Ann b.8 AUG 1843 and James George b.12 JUL 1848. There may be others. George Alvey died 17 MAR 1848. He had previously been married to Teresa Bright b.26 OCT 1820, d. 13 OCT 1839. They had two children;Mary Elizabeth Alvey b.7 FEB 1838 and Peter Alvey b. 8 OCT 1839. Teresa died one week(5 days) after Peter's birth. Mary Emily Shanks Alvey then m(2) Thomas Gough. Children of this marriage believed to be (from various sources) Minerva b.1852, Francis b.1854, William b.1857, Henry Sherman b.1858, James Madison b.1861, Alfred and Ida (twins) b.1866. There may be others. Family states nine children. Was there a Herman? The missing two may be John Joseph and Francis Elizabeth (twins )born to Martha A. Shanks from illicit union. Martha was daughter of Charles and Lydia Shanks. In my geneology I have a Charles Shanks. He married Lydia Wethington. I know they had at least one child, Martha Ann Shanks, b. 1824. She was married in Union Co. Ky, on 29 Dec. 1851. My info is from sketchy notes from baptism records, marriages, census and from other researchers---maybe incomplete---but what I show should be good. I hope to see most of you at the MD/KY reunion at end of this month. Best Regards, James L. Duke

Another geneologist found these children in Mary Emily's household in 1850. The math works. Its probably not a big deal but it might be an anwer to someone's unsolved myster.

In Reply to: Looking for Mary Ellen Shanks wife of Thomas Gough by Mike Gough of 22425

Hi. I found Mary E. Alvey, on the 1850 Union Co. census. Listed was Mary E. Alvey 25, Mary E. 12, William 10, L.A. (female) 6, John R. 4, George 1. Also in her household was John Gough 45, Thomas Shanks 71, M. Shanks(female) 63. I have a marriage CD, that goes up to 1850, so her marriage to Thomas Gough wasn't listed, but I did find her marriage to George Alvey, 8-29-1842. He first married Teresa Bright, in Union 6-4-1837. So the first two children listed, were her step-children. Next door to Mary, was an Ann Alvey 65, born Md. and daughter Polly 37. Next to them, was a John Alvey 34. Poss. mother and siblings to George Alvey. Also, nearby was a Joseph Gough 55, Elizabeth 57, Anne 30, Thomas 29, Dolly 23, Charles 23, Edward 21, John 17, A.E. (female) 3. Hope this helps some.
