At Pearl Harbor with wife and two oldest children during the bombing on December 7. They left Christmas morning. Ernest was then a chief yeoman and had been stationed in Hawaii for 2 years.
At my Grandmother's funeral I wrote down when Grandfather was remembering. Following are those notes: A few months after I started doing genealogy again, I answered a query on a Decatur County Board on the Internet from Ben Rinehold who was researching TUCKERS AND WHITES. Ben remembered when my Grandparents came to visit and told me about that before I found these notes. In August of 2000 Great Aunt Ethel sent me some old pictures. She also recounted the story of going on my Grandparents honeymoon. She enclosed a picture with Harry Lee Nowlin, who was Doug's uncle, another cousin I met through the Internet, on the Weakley County Board.
Notes from conversation with Ernest White, 11/89, at his wife's funeral.
Jesse was married two times to "Miss Ozzie". First time she went with some other man. They ran a store in Medina. Grandpa (Ernest L. White) heard from "Mr. Terry" about the break up so he got a leave. Went AWOL for about 45 days and went with family, including Jesse, to Washington to see his sister's family (Tucker). He and grandma had been engaged before that but split up. Went back to Navy and served some brig time.
Went to Medina for a visit and Waters (married to Grandma's sister Alba May) told him Grandma was seeing another man so he and Waters went and got her.
Got engaged the second time in a cotton patch (the scene Grandma painted on a frying pan) and married soon thereafter.
Went to California and took Ethel with them on their honeymoon.
Jesse's father was a blacksmith.
Artie Goff White Townsell was uneducated and hot tempered. Her father was a farmer. He died when Grandfather was very young.
Grandfather and Grandmother lived next to each other in Medina.

Medina News by Joel Bradbury
Medina native Ernest White joined the Navy well before WWII and he was married to Maurine Terry. On Dec. 7, 1941 while stationed at Pearl Harbor, Maurine had to take her young sons and flee to a field in order to escape the bombs. When he retired, they came back home to Medina for awhile. Ernest was active in community affairs and once ran for mayor of Medina. Later they moved to Florida and Maurine died several years ago. Ernest died Aug. 28 in Florida. His sister, Ethel White Meals lives near Humboldt. Maurine's sisters, Alba May Keaton & Lillie Winston Spirakis now live in Pensacola. (copy provided by Jane Barrett Mayo)

Per his son James Patrick White via e-mail 12/7/2008 "Dad enlisted in 1927 in Nashville. Could be a re-enlistment. Though the time seems out of sequence as he had uninterrupted service from 1927 except in 1934 when went to Tennessee to open a restaurant which did not make it."
Fold3 has his service number as 295 10/90 and he was on the Pearl Harbor Muster Roles at the 14th Naval District (Staff Headquarters) for quarter ending 31 Dec 1941 as CY(PA) [chief yeoman], date of enistment 18 Sep 1937, date first received on board 26 Feb 1941.
