Donnelly stated that Stephen Gough had a son named Charles Gough who predeceased his father. Until about 5 minutes ago, I had Charles as the son of Mary Tattershall, the first wife, but have removed him because he was born prior to 1672 and Stephen Gough didn't marry Mary Tattershall until 1674-1676 (John Jarboe died in 1674). I know that he must have been related to Stephen Gough, but whether he was a son or not is open to question (in my opinion). If he was a son, he was from an unknown wife prior to Mary Tattershall. (This all gets turned on it's ear--see below).
      >
11/16/1693: Admin. accts. of Nicholas Honey, no county. Appraisers: Charles Gough, John Jarboe. (Charles Gough would have been at least 21 as of this date to have served as an appraiser of an estate--this is why I say he was born prior to 1672).
      >
The only connection with Stephen Gough was that the administration accounts of Charles Gough listed Stephen Gough as a creditor.
      >
3/12/1697 (no year given, but about this time): Admin. accts. of Charolus Goff, no county. Appraisers: John Tant, James Greenwell. Debts.: William Spinke, Thomas Kirkley, Stephen Goff, Thomas Cissell.
      >
If Charles Gough was Stephen's son, he couldn't have been more than 33 when he died (Stephen Gough immigrated 1664-1665 and transported no wife or child).
      >
I am removing Charles Gough, b. 1694 as a child of Charles Gough (d. 1696-1697) and I'm deleting Mary. I know he fits in, but can't place him as yet (which is probably why Ms. Donnelly placed him as she did).
      >
Donnelly says that Charles Gough had two children. One named Charles, b. 1694 and one named Mary. No proof. She says that Charles Gough, b. 1694 married Ann Egerton and bases this on the administration accounts of James Egerton, 3/12/1742 in which he names his NOK as Mary Underwood and Ann Gough. I don't have a sister for James Egerton by the name of Ann. He did have a sister Mary who married Thomas Underwood. Curiously, the administration accounts of James Egerton list as one of his creditors, William O'Bryon Goff. Who was this? It's the only and only time I find this name.
      >
I think that Charles Gough, d. 1753 married Ann Herbert, daughter of Francis Herbert and wife, Elizabeth (some say she was Elizabeth Head). One of the NOK of Charles Gough was Cuthbert Herbert who had a sister named Ann. Francis Herbert died in 1754, leaving a will, not naming all of his children. His administration accounts, in 1757, list his daughter, Ann Fenwick. Ann had married 1753-1757, Cuthbert Fenwick. Ann died by 1759 (she wasn't named in the will of her mother, Elizabeth Herbert. Cuthbert Fenwick died in 1762, no wife; no issue. This is not too far fetched because Jane Herbert, sister of Ann Herbert, married George Fenwick, brother of Cuthbert Fenwick.
      >
Jerry Clark is the only source I have that the surname of Clare, widow of Stephen Gough, was Baldwin. Jerry, if you have some proof, please speak up.
      >
      >I have no record of Clare after 1714, but just stumbled over this:
      >
8/28/1753: Admin. accts. of Charles Gough, SMC. Appraisers, Francis Herbert, Robert Hager. Creditors: James Ashley, Charles Smith. NOK: Joseph Price and Mary Brice (I think this name should also be Price). Admx.: Ann Gough (Skinner).
      >
Joseph Price was the son of Thomas Price. Thomas Price had a wife named Clare. Bet you she was Clare, widow of Stephen Tarlton.
      >
12/30/1734: Admin. accts. of Thomas Price, SMC. Sureties: John Horn, John Price. Distribution to: widow, 1/3. Residue to: Joseph Price, Clare Price. Adm: Clare Price.
      >
I think Clare, widow of Stephen Gough, was born Clare Cissell and that she was the daughter of William Cissell (d. 1744). She married first, Stephen Gough; second, Thomas Price; and third ____Batson. Her father's will calls her Clare Barton, but I think this is an error and it should be Batson.
      >
I think that Charles Gough was a posthumous child of Stephen Gough and Clare Cissell AND I think he was the ONLY child that Stephen Gough had by Clare.
      >
We have no proof, that I'm aware of, that Mary Tattershall died in 1677. We know she was sick, but who says she died? Given the time this occurred, she was probably close to giving birth to James Gough.
      >
Does anyone have documentation for this statement? 10/19/1677: Stephen Gough made oath that his wife Mary, the admx. of Lt. Col. John Jarboe was not able to travel so far as St. Maries with great danger having been long sick and therefore prays time til the first Tuesday in November next to give her acct. of her admin. (Donnelly).
      >
Either all of the rest of the children of Stephen Gough were by Mary Tattershall or he had another wife between her and Clare. For the time being, I'm showing all of the children by Mary Tattershall except Charles who I'm assigning to Clare.
      >
I don't think that Charles Gough who died 1696 was a son of Stephen. He was a relative, but I'm not sure how. I have removed him as a child.
      >
This should keep you all busy for a while. I'm leaving early tomorrow morning and will return late Thursday evening. Have fun.
