Davenport, Arlice E., 92, passed from this earthly life to his eternal one on November 4, 2014. Our loss is heaven's gain, and his family looks forward to being reunited someday with their father, husband, grandpa and friend. Arlice was the eighth child born to Ada and John Davenport, who lived near Waldron, Arkansas. He is survived by his younger sister, Margie McFarland of Yuba City, California. He also is survived by Wanda Mae (Tyler) Davenport, his wife of 66 <1/2>years. They are the parents of two sons, Arlice W. (Laura) Davenport of Wichita, KS, and John (Maria) Davenport of San Jose, Costa Rica, and grandparents to Johnny, 10, who spent this past Christmas with them. Arlice was always ready for an adventure, tagging along with his older brothers who worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in rural Arkansas. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in North Africa and India during World War II. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he traveled to California to try his hand at several employment opportunities. While there, he met Wanda, who also was keen to try new things. They worked together in the redwoods of northern California, picked cotton in Texas and eventually settled in Wichita, where Arlice began working as a barber. This career spanned three decades before he became employed by the Coleman Company. He retired from there in 1987, buying property north of Kechi and building a large home on 10 acres. The Davenports attended Valley Center Assembly of God for a time, and became active at the Wellness Center in Newton, making many friends. An avid student, Arlice taught adult Sunday school for many years at Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Wichita, served as a deacon, sang in the choir and performed tenor solos. He wrote poetry and music, and could often be found reading the encyclopedia or dictionary. In retirement, he planted several fruit trees and a large garden, keeping his wife busy canning vegetables and fruit. His quick sense of humor and knack for telling stories entertained friends, family and strangers he met while waiting on his wife to finish her shopping. A graveside service will be held at Kechi Township Cemetery, 61st Street N. and Hillside, at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 10. Family visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Baker Funeral Home, 6100 E. Central, Suite 203, in Wichita. If you wish to honor his memory, donations may be made to the Assemblies of God Hillcrest Children's Home, 2325 Malvern Avenue, Hot Springs, AR 71901. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/Kansas/obituary.aspx?pid=173090352#sthash.X2vkoYoO.dpuf
