Mrs. Mary Pike, 83 years old, a wealthy Union county woman, and a native of this county, died last week near Uniontown following a week's illness of bronchitis. The burial was in the Catholic cemetery at Uniontown beside her husband, the late Sylvester Pike, a pioneer wagon manufacturer of Kentucky.
Mr Sylvestor Pike, of Uniontown, died Saturday (June 8, 1907) at the hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Jeffersontown, IN, where he had been under treatment for several months. He had been in failing health for several years, but his extreme illness was of only a few days duration. His remains, accompanied
by his wife and children who were with him when the end came, reached Uniontown early Sunday Morning. He was born in Meade Co, KY, 77 years ago, but had lived in Uniontown and vicinity for 54 years. He was for many years one of the leading personages of the County, being engaged in various commercial enterprises, the organizer of several Banks and other financial institutions. He was also the first Mayor of Uniontown. He was always a zealous Catholic, a generous giver to the Church and charitable to the poor. He was married in 1850 to Miss Sarah Newton, who, with the following children survive him: Mr Ben Pike, Mesdames Emma Newman, G W Clements, W M Morgan, Rev. W D Pike of Fairfield and Sister Agnes Maria of the Sisters of Charity, now at Whitesville. His funeral services were conducted Monday Morning in St Agnes Church, his son, Father Pike, being the celebrant of the Solemn Requiem Mass, with his nephew, Rev Ben J Wight, as Deacon and Rev Theophilus Kellenaers, pastor of Uniontown at the time, as Sub-Deacon. A large crowd attended his obsequies, as befitted his long years of honorable residence in the community.
Hope this is of some use to someone.
