David J. Stumpf, 91, passed away on June 30, 2012. He was born on July 12, 1920, in Evansville, Ind.
David is a graduate of Memorial High School and attended the University of Evansville (Evansville College) and was awarded his solo wings in 1939, prior to joining the Army Air Corp (Air Force) in 1942. He was assigned to the Flying Fortresses and served with the 15th Air Force in Italy as a B-17 pilot.
Lt. David J. Stumpf was awarded the highest rating of "Distinguished Bombardier" given by the Air Corps, a veteran of the Sicilian and Italian invasions and appointed squadron leader while in Italy. He was commended twice for "services performed", awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters.
He was active in scouting as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout troop leader. He served as a Field Commissioner and was awarded the St. George Catholic Scouting Medal, the Bronze Pelican Award and the Silver Beaver Award.
David retired from Blue Cross - Blue Shield of Indiana, where in 1989 he received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for 34 years of outstanding service to clients and the company.
He was a member of the B17 Combat Crewmen and Wingmen Association, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, past member of VFW Post 1114 and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
His hobbies included raising Golden Retrievers, photography, gardening and boating on Barkley Lake with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth (Betty Burch Wathen) Stumpf, originally from Morganfield, Ky.; and six children, E. Ann Clem (Dr. Bruce), John D. Stumpf (Margaret [Jo]), Mark K. Stumpf (Gloria), Mary S. McCarthy (James), Paul A. Stumpf (Marysue), and Jane S. Wildeman (Dick); 16 grandchildren, Sean (Colleen) and Jeremy (Adrienne) Clem, Katie Stumpf Eller (Dr. Scott), Jason, David, Jennifer and Daniel (Tanaya) Stumpf, Owen McCarthy and Blair McCarthy Atkinson (CPT(P)Paul), Casey (Melissa), Adam, Kipp (Toni) Stumpf and Lindsay Stumpf Silverstein (Brandon), Phillip, Matthew and Kathleen Mason; and six great-granddaughters, Madeline Margaret, Elizabeth Grace and Mary Katherine Eller, Addison and McKenzie Silverstein and Vivienne Elizabeth Clem.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714, with a Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3010 E. Chandler Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714 from 10:30 till 11 a.m. Wednesday July 4, 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Father Alex Zenthoefer and Father Ryan Hilderbrand officiating, entombment in St. Joseph Mausoleum.
