I have the first wife of James Gough as Susanna Medley. Why do you think her name was Susanna Medley Jenkins? According to Donnelly, she was the daughter of Thomas Medley and Mary Fenwick, but I'm not sure as I can find no evidence to corroborate that. Linda Reno

I obtained the following information from Sr. Vickie Cravens at Mt. St. Joseph's in Owensboro, KY. It was contained in some Genealogical files that they maintain.

Sr. Vickie Cravens at Mt. St. Joseph's. The information she has stems around James H. Gough m. Susanna Medley, son Ignatius bapt. St.. Francis in Georgetown KY, d. 1825 m. Susan Beavins, children were James Henry b. 1831 (m. Cordelia Cecelia Jenkins), George, Harriett A., Susan Rebecca, Wm. M. Susan (Beavins) remarried Henry McAtee in Scott County KY, after Ignatius died. (I think she died in 1848). They moved to Monroe County, MO. Susanna Medley Jenkins' (probably meant Cordelia Cecelia Jenkins see note below) parents were Thomas Courtney Jenkins & Elizabeth (?) and also moved to Monroe County MO.

I wonder now if she meant to write: "Cordelia Cecelia Jenkins' parents were Thomas Courtney Jenkins & Elizabeth (?) and also moved to Monroe County MO." Yes!!!!

Since, I did find another tree that said she was the daughter of Thomas Jenkins:

Gough, Cordelia Cecelia Daugh. of Thomas & ( ) Jenkins of Scott Co., Ky. 1st wife of James Henry Gough - 8 children D. Oct. 2, 1864 Age 51 yrs. 4 mos. 24 days

      Hi Mike,

Here's where I am at this point:

      1. There is no evidence that Susanna, wife of James Gough, was Susanna Medley, daughter of Thomas Medley and Mary Fenwick. Thomas Medley died intestate before 9/23/1764 with Mary administering the estate. No children were named.

      2. There is no evidence that Mary, wife of Thomas Medley, was a Fenwick. His wife may have been Mary Bailey, daughter of James Bailey who owned "Barren Doe" in 1710 and 1719. After that date, Thomas Medley owned the property until at least 1760.

      3. I think, but am lacking firm evidence, that Susanna, wife of James Gough, may have been Susanna Wildman, daughter of Cornelius Wildman, Jr. and Susanna Langley. Remember that Susanna named her first son Cornelius.

Will of Cornelius Wildman, SMC 10/10/1763-11/2/1763. Son: John, furniture. Wife: Ann, during life, land where I live called "Brooks' Chance" and at her death to son Cornelius and 5 slaves. Son: Cornelius, "Wildman's Venture" and 100 ac. "Tavern"; "Golden Grove"; "Dillon's Disappointment"; at death of wife, land where I live "Brooks' Chance" and for want of heirs to my daughters: Mary Ann, Susanna, and Monica; desk, looking glass, there being one now in the new house, and I have sent to England for another. Daughter: Mary Ann Snowden, 1 slave. Daughter: Susanna, 2 slaves. Daughter: Monica, 2 slaves. Children: Mary Ann, Cornelius, Susanna, and Monica the remainder of my estate. Execs: Wife, Ann and son, Cornelius. Wit: Mark Crewis, James McKibby, John Reeder, Jr., Clement Mahoney. (Maryland Calendar of Wills).

Admin. accts. of Cornelius Wildman 7/28/1765; sureties were John Reeder, Jr. and Athanasius Ford; legatees were: Son, John (items belonging to his mother); Cornelius, Mary Ann Snowden, Susanna, and Monica; Distribution to: Widow, 1/3 and residue to children, Mary Ann, Cornelius, Susanna, and Monica; Execs., Cornelius Wildman, Henry Hudson Wathen and his wife Ann Wathen (Skinner).

Cornelius Wildman III (son of Cornelius Wildman, Jr. and Susanna Langley and Susanna's brother) married Tabitha Dorcas Miles (who had several siblings who went to KY).

      Linda

Jerry, we discussed this on the list last week, I think.

You probably picked up that information from Ms. Donnelly. I'm not sure how she reached that conclusion, but I could never find any proof that Thomas Medley and wife, Mary (and, incidentally, I find no proof that she was Mary Fenwick) had any children, more less a daughter named Susanna. His admin. accts. name only his wife, Mary.

9/23/1764: Admin. accts. of Thomas Medley, SMC. NOK:, Ann Cole and Clement Medley, Jr. Exec: Wife, Mary.

Incidentally, Thomas Medley's wife may have been Mary Bailey, daughter of James Bailey who owned "Barren Doe" in 1710 and 1719. After that date, Thomas Medley owned the property until at least 1760.

I'd really suspected that Susanna, wife of James Gough, was Susanna Wildman, daughter of Cornelius Wildman. He had a daughter of the right age and since James and Susanna named a child Cornelius, I was suspicious. It wasn't until this morning when I got the note from Mike Gough and took a look at Susanna Tarlton, sister of Jeremiah Tarlton that the bells started ringing. Both women stated to be born in 1746 and the records in KY, although wrong, were close, as they indicated that Susanna, wife of James Gough, was a sister of Eleanor Medley, wife of Jeremiah Tarlton. Instead, as it turns out, she was her sister-in-law.
