Crossing the Dark River; Henderson County, Tennessee, Obituaries; 1827-1950 p. 304 GOFF, George W. (The Lexington Progress, June 27, 1930) George W. Goff, who departed this life at the hour of 2:00 p.m., June 19, 1930, would have been 69 years old had he lived until August. He was born and reared in Henderson County and lived his whole life here. Fifty years ago last Mach 5th, he was married to Miss Susan Hefley, daughter of the late Stephen Hefley of the old 11th district, and of the seven children born to the union, Agnes died at the age of 42, the wife of J. H. Petty, and Steve, who died several years ago, leaving a family. Five sons survive: Dr. J. F., George, Jr., Ben H., William M., and Hobart, all of Henderson County except Hobart who resides in Decatur County.
Some two years ago Mr. Goff became a member of the Baptist Church, hence it was fitting that on last Friday his remains should be carried to that house of worship in Lexington (the First Church) where the last rites were held, Revs. Fleetwood Ball, W. F. Boren and G. G. Joyner officiating, and all paying glowing tribute to the sincerity of purpose and goodness of heart of the man who body lay before them.
George Goff had been a business man, a farmer and an official of Henderson County and his integrity was no more to be questioned than was his neighborliness, for which he and his family were always noted. He had the faults and foibles incident to humanity but he always loved his family, his friends and his country. H is heart was in the right place and his pocket always in easy reach when his charity was appealed to. Between George Goff and the writer there were no beliefs in common, yet they entertained for each other a friendship that was unbroken through more than a quarter of a century. We join in the hope that his soul is resting in peace.

Union sympathizers were handicapped by the lack of a recruiting station; men
had to leave the state, the majority of the volunteers traveling as far as
Illinois to join the Union army. Hays reportedly sent at least 150 residents
of Henderson and Decatur counties to fight against the rebel cause. Among
these soldiers were William Essary, father of E. W. Essary; Thomas W. Goff,
father of G. W. Goff; and Bill, Jesse, and Steve Goff. Thomas Goff died at
Mounds, Illinois, in 1863
