Notes - VIZE, WILLIAM THEODORE & BRITANNA SMALLWOOD (daughter of Basil Smallwood & Mary Gough)(married 6-11-1808 Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD)
Baptized Liza Vize, 2-03-1832, by Rev. Robert Byrne at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Birth date not given. Sponsor, Eleanor Vize. Parents: William and Britanna Vize.
William Theodore Vize is buried next to his wife Brittania Smallwood Vize. His tombstone no longer exists. His foot stone existed until @1990.
William & Brittania were married 11 Jun 1808 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, MD [Baltimore Evening Post]. The christening of their first children took place in the Basilica of the Assumption, Baltimore. There is a record of a Private William T Vize serving in the War of 1812 in the 1 Reg't District of Columbia Militia found in the Index to the Compiled Military Service Records for the Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812. Washington, DC: National Archives and Records Administration. Roll Exct 602, Roll Box 216. This is a listing of men mustered into the American armed forces between 1812 and 1815 for the War of 1812.
Mary Gough Smallwood, Brittania's mother, and the William Theodore Vize family moved to Washington Co, KY in the late 1810's, early 1820's. Mary Gough Smallwood's two brothers, Charles & Jeremiah Gough, & their families also removed to Washington County at this time.
William Vize and family are listed in the 1830 Washington Co, KY census. In 1831 both William T and Brittania signed for their daughter, Beatrix, to marry Stephen Pike. The Vizes are listed in the 1840 Marion Co, KY census. Sometime in the 1840's they moved near Morganfield, Union Co, KY and are listed in the 1850 & 1860 censuses of that county where William is listed as a farmer. They had ten children.
Later in life William T Vize and Brittania 'Tanny' Vize lived on the Vize homestead with the family of their son Ben and his wife, Marjorie McMurray Vize, until they died. The original tract of land on Casey Creek remained in the family for more than 100 years, in fact fifty acres of this land was still in the family being owned by Ben Vize II, when it was taken over by the United States Government for Camp Breckenridge in 1944.
William died on a woodland trail half-way between the Vize farm & Boxville. It seems he had been over to visit his daughter Ellen in Boxville, a distance of @10 miles. Jerome & James Benjamin Vize and Stephen Fenwick (Ellen's husband) found William dead beside a log where he evidently had been resting on his return home. -Karen Neeley Thomas
